This study investigated how 9- and 10-year-old children from a Mexican metropolitan city view child participation in family household work, and examined the relation of their views to the range/ complexity and voluntariness of their household work contributions. Almost all of the 16 children reported that children want to contribute to family household work, which they regarded as the shared responsibility of everyone in the family. However, the 8 children who lived in an Indigenous-heritage community were more often reported to take initiative to make broad and complex work contributions than children from a Newly Schooled community. The children in the Indigenous-heritage community more often emphasized their mutual coordination and collaboration with other members of the family, whereas children from the Newly Schooled community often focused on their personal contributions.
[La iniciativa de niños Mexicanos en el trabajo familiar cotidiano.]
Este estudio investiga el punto de vista de niños de 9 a 10 años de una ciudad Mexicana metropolitano sobre la participación de niños en el trabajo familiar cotidiano, y también la relación entre su punto de vista y la variedad/complejidad e iniciativa de sus contribuciones. Casi todos los 16 niños reportaron que niños quieren contribuir al trabajo familiar cotidiano, lo cual entendían como una responsabilidad compartida entre toda la familia. Sin embargo, los 8 niños de una comunidad de herencia Indígena mencionaron con más frecuencia contribuir con iniciativa y con una variedad y complejidad de contribuciones comparado con los niños de una comunidad Recién Escolarizada. Los niños de la comunidad de herencia Indígena se enfocaron en la coordinación mutua y colaboración con otros miembros de la familia, mientras los niños de la comunidad Recién Escolarizada enfatizaron sus contribuciones individuales.
